Dr. Raquel Ukeles, Dr. Yoel Finkelman

NLI USA Signature Speakers Series:

NLI USA Travels Through History and Throughout the World

Two of the National Library of Israel’s leading authorities on its treasures, Dr. Raquel Ukeles, Head of Collections, and Dr. Yoel Finkelman, Judaica Curator, will explore highlights of the Library’s collection and offer a behind the scenes window into the challenges and opportunities in securing the Library’s treasures.

Dr. Raquel Ukeles, Head of Collections at the National Library of Israel, is responsible for the overall development of all the Library’s collections and for digital, cultural, and educational initiatives based on the collections. She has published and taught on a wide array of subjects related to comparative Jewish and Islamic traditions, and on historical currents that shape Israeli society.

Dr. Yoel Finkelman is curator of the Haim and Hanna Salomon Judaica Collection at the National Library of Israel. His work focuses on collection development and digitization. Formerly a lecturer at Bar-Ilan University and a teacher of Torah in Jerusalem, his book, Strictly Kosher Reading: Popular Literature and the Condition of Contemporary Orthodoxy appeared in 2011.

*Inspired by the new opportunities for virtual gatherings and the expanded view of 21st century libraries as centers of lively discourse, NLI USA developed this series to probe issues of our day. The talks relate—some loosely and others intimately—to the collections of the Library and provide an opportunity for the NLI USA leadership and the Library’s experts to share their insights with the broader community.
