History, Fiction, and Statecraft: The Confluence of Creativity and Diplomacy

Ambassador Michael Oren is an historian, statesman, and Israeli leader. He is also an avid fiction writer. In conversation with Tablet magazine’s Liel Leibovitz, Michael Oren will explore the common elements of writing in multiple genres and will relate these commonalities to the necessary tools of diplomacy.

Michael Oren served as Israel’s ambassador to the United States, as a Member of Knesset, and as Deputy Minister of Diplomacy in the Prime Minister’s Office. Among his many honors, Michael  was named by Politico as one of the fifty most influential thinkers in America, by the Forward as one of the five most influential Jews in America, and by the Jerusalem Post as one of the ten most influential Jews worldwide. A graduate of Princeton and Columbia, he has taught at Harvard, Yale, and Georgetown. His last three books, Six Days of War, Power, Faith, and Fantasy, and Ally, were New York Times bestsellers and award winners.

Liel Leibovitz is editor at large for Tablet Magazine and the co-host of Unorthodox, the world's most popular Jewish podcast. He's the author or co-author of several books, including biographies of Leonard Cohen and Stan Lee and, most recently, The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia. He is also a contributor to several publications, including the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and served as assistant professor of communications at New York University.

*Inspired by the new opportunities for virtual gatherings and the expanded view of 21st century libraries as centers of lively discourse, NLI USA developed this series to probe issues of our day. The talks relate—some loosely and others intimately—to the collections of the Library and provide an opportunity for the NLI USA leadership and the Library’s experts to share their insights with the broader community.
