Lessons and Lineage: A Life of Learning

Dr. Zvi Leshem & Prof. Baruch Weiss

In a special NLI USA event marking the first yahrtzeit of HaRav Professor David Weiss Halivni z”l, Dr. Zvi Leshem, director of the Gershom Scholem Collection for Kabbalah and Hasidism at the National Library of Israel, and Baruch Weiss, Professor Halivni’s son, will share first-hand accounts and personal insights into Professor Halivni’s tremendous legacy as a mentor and one of the greatest Torah scholars of our time.

Zvi Leshem, a close student of Professor Halivni for nearly fifty years, holds a PhD from Bar-Ilan University in Jewish Thought and received ordination from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. After several decades of work in Jewish education and as a community rabbi, Zvi began directing the Gershom Scholem Collection for Kabbalah and Hasidism at the National Library of Israel in 2011. His research deals with Hasidic mystical experience, Jewish education, Gershom Scholem and the philosophy of Rav Shagar.

Baruch Weiss is one of three of Professor Halivni’s sons. A life-long student of his father’s, Baruch started studying the Talmud with his father at a very young age. He studied with him while completing his Masters degree in Talmud at the Jewish Theological Seminary, and continued to learn with him regularly thereafter. Baruch currently teaches an ongoing Talmud class, and employs his father’s shita or methodology. Baruch is an attorney at the law firm of Arnold & Porter in Washington D.C., and had served previously in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, The U.S. Department of Treasury and the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York City.
