Very little is known or agreed upon in regards to “Mr. Shushani” (also known as “Monsieur Chouchani”), a mysterious and almost mythically brilliant man who served as an influential teacher and mentor to Elie Wiesel, Emmanuel Levinas and other leading 20th century Jewish intellectual figures.
Shushani left behind an abundance of notebooks and letters filled with secrets. Dozens of these books are now deposited at the National Library of Jerusalem. In the wake of this monumental deposit, the Library is hosting a panel discussion dedicated to the figure of Mr. Shushani and his body of work.
We consider it of paramount importance to bring to the public’s attention the story of one of the most mysterious and influential figures in twentieth-century Jewish thought.
